The diabetes mellitus among Korean is characterized by low incidence, relatively more milder forms, good prognosis and extremely rare development of diabetic coma, though the incidence tended to increase recently. The author have already reported out 182 cases of diabetes mellitus who visited our clinic during: the period of 5 years up to 1961, and this is the report on 107 cases who were studied in 1962. The summary of the clinical and laboratory findings are as follows:
1) The incidence of the diabetes mellitus among all of the in and out patients of the department was 0.75 per cent, with sex ratio of male 1.9 : female 1. The incidence was highest among the patients in 6th decade, followed by the 5th, 4th and 7th decades in that order. on1y one case was seen in 2nd decade.
2) About the important possible factors, obesity was found in 19 per cent of patients, heredity in 11 percepnt. and infection in 6.7 per cent. No significant etiological factor was detectable in 51 percent of the cases.
3) Initial symptoms were: thirst in 56 percent, polyuria in 52.0 per cent, polyphagia in 38.0 percent. weakness in 28.0 per cent, and loss of weight9.4 per cent
4) The fasting blood sugar levels before treatment were less than 109 mg. per 100 ml. in 19.6 per cent,110-149 mg. in 21.5 per cent, 150-199 mg, in 30.9´per cent and above 200 mg. in 28.0 per cent of the patients.
5) Most frequent complications observed were neurological disturbance in 29.0 per cent, hypertension in23.0 per cent, pulmonary tuberculosis in 11.5 percent, and other infections in 8.5 per cent of the cases. Diabetic retinopathy in 19.3 per cent, renal disturbance in 24.1 per cent, and arteriolar sclerosis. of the retina in 2.8 per cent of the cases. No complication was detected in 17.4 per cent of the cases.
6) In 54 cases of 107 cases, adequate follow up of the result of the therapy were possible. Among them.44 cases reached good control, 5 cases fair control but 5 cases were primary failure.
